يعود السبب إلى أن هذا الدواء يتحول في الجسم الي دواء آخر يدعى "مورفين"، وفي حال الإرضاع سينتقل للطفل عن طريق الحليب مما يسبب سمية عصبية للرضيع قد تؤدي للوفاة .
